MEETING POINT: Exit 1 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (DDP) (동대문역사문화공원역, Subway Lines 2, 4, and 5). The exit opens into the basement of Dongdaemun Design Plaza.


As the weather grows hotter, the time is right to explore a number of lesser-known museums in the Dongdaemun area that uncover the layered history of eastern Seoul and reveal how the city has continually reinvented itself as it changed from a royal capital and colonial city to an industrial metropolis and global cultural center.

 
We will begin at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and the adjacent Dongdaemun History Museum 1398, where one of Seoul’s most futuristic spaces was constructed atop the remains of the Seoul fortress. Beneath DDP’s iconic curves lie excavated traces of the old city, including sections of the Seoul City Wall, military facilities, and foundations uncovered during construction, which create a stark contrast between past and present. From there, we will walk to the Seoul City Wall Museum, which tells the story of the wall that once enclosed Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty. Built in the late 14th century and repeatedly rebuilt and expanded over the centuries that followed, the wall shaped both the physical and symbolic boundaries of Seoul. The museum explores its construction and maintenance, the lives of those who lived alongside it, and its colonial-era disappearance and more recent reconstruction.

 
Continuing on, we will visit the Baek Nam-jun Memorial House, a modest space dedicated to the pioneering video artist Nam June Paik. Hidden within a quiet residential neighborhood, the house offers a glimpse into the early life of an artist whose work would later transform global contemporary art and whose influence remains visible across Seoul’s museum and media landscape today. After a short bus ride and a quick walk along the Jeongneungcheon Stream to the point where it meets Cheonggyecheon Stream, we will stop by the recreated makeshift houses that once lined the stream, and then visit the Cheonggyecheon Museum. The first section of the museum traces the stream’s evolution from an open waterway to one buried beneath concrete and highways, while its final section examines the process by which the stream was uncovered and restored in the early 2000s, and offers insight into the way Seoul’s urban fabric has changed in the past century.

 
The excursion will begin at 1:00 at Exit 1 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (DDP) (동대문역사문화공원역, Subway Lines 2, 4, and 5) and end near Yongdu (용두) Station (Subway Line 2 (Spur line)). After the excursion, participants have the option to join Matt for coffee or an early dinner. Please note that the cost of the meal is not included in the excursion fee. Although the walk is mostly flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
