- **Event Description**: Join this timely discussion on conflict and hunger in 2026, and Norway’s vital role in advancing peace and principled humanitarian action.About this EventIn 2020, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) ‘’for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.’’ In the Nobel Prize lecture delivered by former WFP Executive Director, David Beasley, in Oslo in 2021, he highlighted food as the pathway to peace and stressed that ‘’If we don’t avert famine now, there will be destabilization of nations, and mass migration, and it will cost us a thousand times more’’ compared to feeding hungry people in their home countries.Five years later, global acute hunger has more than doubled to 318 million people as a result of new wars and conflict and accelerated by climate change and high food prices, while the funding available to respond to the record-high hunger levels has dramatically decreased. At the same time, humanitarian organizations are struggling to secure safe humanitarian access to affected populations in many conflicts and aid workers are increasingly being targeted by warring parties reflecting a growing disregard for international humanitarian law.Hosted by the Nobel Peace Center and WFP, this event brings together leaders and experts from the Norwegian Government, Norwegian Refugee Council, the Nobel Peace Center and WFP for a discussion on the state of conflict and hunger in 2026, possible solutions for ending violent conflicts and reducing hunger in a changing geopolitical landscape, and the critical role of Norway in supporting peace and principled humanitarian action.ParticipantsCarl Skau, Deputy Executive Director, WFPAndreas Motzfeldt Kravik, State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign AffairsKjersti Fløgstad, Director, Nobel Peace Center.Camilla Waszink, Executive Director of Partnerships and Policy, Norwegian Refugee CouncilCatharina Bu, Secretary General, UN Association of NorwayCoffee and tea will be provided for attendees from 08:00.
