- **Event Description**: Irish society and culture were severely changed by the effects of An Gorta Mor, also known as the Great Hunger or the Great Famine. Young single women with no options left in Ireland emigrated to America for the opportunity to break free from their perpetual girlhood. Four of the seven women identified as having worked at the Becker Mansion either came from Ireland themselves or came from families who emigrated from Ireland.

Ciarrai Eaton, executive director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, will discuss her master’s research on the unusual story of these women and their time here in upstate New York in a presentation titled “GIRLS: Irish Immigrant Women in Upstate New York.” Artifacts will be on display during the presentation. 

This program will take place on Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. in the Becker Mansion dining room. 

Admission costs $8 for members of either SFHS or MJGF and $10 for nonmembers. Registration in advance is welcome but not required.
