- **Event Description**: Get a hands-on introduction to the butterflies and day-flying moths of our region. Day one of this two-day course will begin in the SFI classroom with mounted specimens and a discussion of butterfly and moth lifestyles and locales. We’ll move to the field that afternoon to practice netting (catch and release) live lepidoptera, observing each species closely with expert guidance. The next day field days will be spent netting and appreciating the diversity of butterflies and moths in the Illinois Valley. Participants will receive plenty of hands-on practice netting and identifying local species, both common and rare.

 

Knowledge level: Intermediate
Physical level: Moderate- (1-3 miles of hiking per day and/or climbs of up to 500 ft)
