Bianca Graulau’s mini-docs expose gentrification, land grabs, food insecurity, and resistance shaping Puerto Rico’s fight for its future.

About this Event

La Residencia: no me dejan quedarme aquí events is part of , bringing film screenings and art talks into the gallery. The program highlights Hurricane María, debt, displacement, and protest, while centering voices from Borikén/Puerto Rico. It pushes against colonial myths, keeping alive the voices and futures that such scripts attempt to silence. This day we will be showing a series of micro-documentaries by independent Boricua journalist Bianca Graulau.

List of short-documentaries:

1st: Rich People are Moving to Puerto Rico and Some Puerto Ricans are not Happy About it (13min runtime) Description: Coastal towns are getting gentrified, and Puerto Ricans are worried they will get priced out.


2nd: Are Puerto Ricans Being Pushed Out? (13min runtime)

Description: Tax breaks, beautiful views, and cheap real estate are attracting people to Puerto Rico. Some locals say they're getting pushed out by newcomers looking to make money.


3rd: The Puerto Ricans Who Fought the U.S. Navy and Won (14min runtime)

Description: Our investigation found that the government of Puerto Rico is allowing the fast-tracking of construction projects that potentially threaten Culebra's ecosystems.


4th: The Young Puerto Ricans Returning to the Land (14min runtime)

Description: Puerto Rico imports approximately 85 percent of its food. How did we get here? In one word: colonization.


5th: Occupied Land (13min runtime)

Description: Some Puerto Ricans are illegally occupying land and buildings to resist gentrification and displacement.


6th: We Sued the Puerto Rican Government to Obtain these Documents (13.5min runtime)

Description: A multi-million dollar luxury development on the coast of Cabo Rojo would be built on protected land. What would Esencia mean for local residents?


*These documentaries are both in English and Spanish with English subtitles*
