- **Event Description**: Chang-rae Lee, author of Native Speaker visits the store for his spellbinding new novel, A Tender AgeAbout this EventChang-rae Lee, author of Native Speaker, My Year Abroad, and more, visits the store for his new novel, A Tender Age, a spellbinding exploration of American masculinity and family dynamics as seen through the confused eyes of a prepubescent child of immigrants, joining the rich tradition of the American bildungsroman. He will be joined by E.J. Koh, author of The Magical Language of Others and The Liberators.Guilt, innocence, and a boy on the cusp of adolescence. The natural descendent of characters like Huckleberry Finn and Holden Caufield, Korean-American Jeon-Gi is torn between competing ideas of himself. At home, his working-class parents dote on him. Outside, he is part of a roving pack of kids with dominion over a derelict baseball field, weedy parking lot, and rusty jungle gym. Getting into and out of trouble is all-consuming. But the summer he turns eleven, he becomes embroiled in a staggering series of events reverberating far beyond himself and his family.Devastating in its emotional precision, A Tender Age captures a family and community in striking distance of the American dream, and a young person on the precipice of adult knowledge, looking at his own culpability and looking away—then thinking about it for the rest of his life.Chang-rae Lee, a deeply influential writer about race, class and immigrant life in America, has built a dazzling reputation as “a spellbinder” (The Hartford Courant), “a master craftsman” (The Washington Post), and “one of our most silken storytellers” (The Boston Globe). He has also been honored with top prizes including a PEN/Hemingway Prize, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Asian American Literary Award, Pulitzer finalist and Neustadt International Prize for Literature nomination. After the publication of his novel On Such a Full Sea the Los Angeles Times declared: “Who is a greater novelist than Chang-rae Lee?”E. J. Koh is the author of the novel The Liberators, which won The New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award and was a finalist for the Washington State Book Award and the Pacific Northwest Book Award. Her memoir The Magical Language of Others won the Washington State Book Award, Pacific Northwest Book Award, Association for Asian American Studies Book Award, and was longlisted for the PEN/Open Book Award. Her poetry book A Lesser Love won the Pleiades Editors Prize for Poetry. Koh is a translator of Yi Won’s poetry collection The World’s Lightest Motorcycle, which won the Literature Translation Institute of Korea’s Translation Grand Prize. Her work has appeared in AGNI, The Atlantic, Boston Review, Los Angeles Review, POETRY Magazine, Slate, Teen Vogue, and World Literature Today. Koh earned her MFA at Columbia University in New York for Creative Writing and Literary Translation and her PhD at the University of Washington in English Language and Literature studying Korean American literature, history, and film. Koh has received National Endowment for the Arts, MacDowell, and American Literary Translators Association fellowships.
