Deep listening, shared presence, and music that lives in the room.About this EventThe Dragonfly is an underground jazz gathering devoted to deep listening, shared presence, and the kind of musical intimacy that can only happen in a room built for closeness.Hosted in the historic Carriage Room at Chez Serendip, this evening brings jazz into a space shaped by history and resonance. Built in 1928, the Carriage Room has lived many lives, from horse and buggy storage to Prohibition-era gatherings to a vinyl listening room anchored by a 1902 Steinway piano. Today, it opens its doors as a place where music is not performed at an audience, but shared within it.There is no elevated stage and no separation between musicians and listeners. The music lives in the center of the room, unfolding through improvisation, conversation, and attention. This is not background music or a bar setting. It is a listening experience that asks guests to arrive fully and stay present.The evening features the Maxwell Goldfield-Brown Quintet, led by Santa Cruz–based saxophonist Max Goldfield-Brown. Max has lived in Santa Cruz his entire life and brings a deep devotion to jazz as a living tradition rooted in listening, lineage, and relationship. His work is guided by a desire to honor the African American musicians whose integrity and genius shaped the form, and to create spaces where jazz can be experienced as something alive rather than consumed.This event is presented by Temptations Bazaar, a local grassroots arts organizer centered on elevating local voices and cultivating intimate, community-driven cultural gatherings, in collaboration with Chez Serendip.Evening Flow6:00–7:00 PM | Welcome HourArrive slowly. Walk the grounds. Settle into the space with tea and light offerings.7:30–9:30 PM | Jazz SetAn intimate, seated jazz session focused on listening, interplay, and shared presence.9:30 PM onward | Open JamThe room opens. Musicians are invited to step in and play together. Listeners are welcome to stay and witness what unfolds.AdmissionThis event operates on a community-supported sliding scale.Guests are invited to choose a ticket level that reflects both their means and their desire to help make the experience accessible to others.Suggested contribution: $15–$50Ticket contributions are shared between the musicians and Chez Serendip to support the artists and sustain this ongoing series.Space is limited to preserve the intimacy of the room.Food & BeverageChez Serendip is not a restaurant or bar. Light offerings will be available, including locally grown teas from Woven Herbs and simple pastries.
