We propose an approach to singing and dancing through the exploration of our own behaviour when we inhabit a space together with other people. Singing, approached through the care with which each person cohabits a place — physical and sonic — and worked not in a technical way, but through play, intention and imagination. Dance, understood as the way we react to a specific rhythm and through which we relate to one another. Singing and dancing as forms through which a performative complexity can emerge — in each person and between people — enriching the shared space.

Through singing and dancing — the way the voice occupies a place, the behaviour that takes shape with the rhythm, play and interaction — we will explore the relationship between each person's inner world (their imagination, their desires, their singular way of being, their silences) and the shared space, and how that space can hold them.

The working material will be traditional Afro-Colombian songs. These songs have simple melodic and choreographic structures, which allows them to be learned quickly and frees attention for what happens between people while they are sung and danced: the rhythm and the way it organises collective and individual behaviour, fluid attention, interaction, the sung word and its meaning, movement structured through dance.

The methodology will be rooted in play, understood as a space where, through simple rules, we give ourselves over to an exercise of presence, imagination and relation. There is no result to reach, only a path for briefly discovering or experiencing new ways of being together.

The workshop is open to anyone who works with voice and song — professionally, as a student, or out of passion. Including (but not limited to) performers, singers, choir directors, educators, students…
