Handbuilding Basics

A 4-Week Clay Workshop with Studio Artist Kelly Mueller

Ready to get your hands in the clay and really learn what it can do?

Join our very own studio artist Kelly Mueller for a four-week dive into the fundamentals of handbuilding. Designed for beginners as well as anyone looking to strengthen their skills, this workshop gives you the time to move beyond a quick introduction and really explore the techniques that make handbuilt pottery and sculpture successful.

Over four weeks, Kelly will share the tips, tricks, techniques, and hard-earned know-how she has gathered through her own studio practice. You’ll explore the essential building blocks of working with clay, including pinching, coiling, slab building, joining, shaping, texture, and surface design, while learning how to turn an idea into a well-crafted finished piece. With a little more time to experiment, troubleshoot, and build, you’ll begin to understand not just how to make something in clay, but why certain techniques work.

Expect plenty of hands-on making, demonstrations, creative freedom, and individual guidance along the way.
