Woodson: Our Father, Who Art a Negro,” on Presidents Day, Monday, February 16, at the Schaumburg Township Library. "Carter G. Woodson: Our Father, Who Art a Negro," is an interactive, talk-show conversation with the educator known as “The Father of Black History. The story is written and performed by KIT founding directors Michael Edgar Myers and Vikki J. Myers to spotlight the anniversaries of two February rituals Woodson’s research inspired and their relevance to U.S. history. The milestones are· Negro History Week that Woodson established 100 years ago; which evolved into· Black History Month, established 50 years ago by Presidential proclamation. The 55-minute show will be presented at 12 PM followed immediately by an audience Q&A with the cast. The is free event, however, reservations are requested.Event Date: February 16, 2026 at 12:00 PM (Central Time)The story of how these studies came to be and their relevance today is the focus of the script, a work-in-progress, based on the books and articles written by Dr. Woodson. The program depicts popular talk show hostess TaMaRah Overton interviewing Dr. Woodson before a studio audience as she prepares a Black history documentary.https://vimeo.com/1133647271?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ciAbout The ShowAlthough both Negro History Week and Black History Month are long established within African-American communities and known among educators of all nationalities in the U.S., lesser known are the life of Woodson, his rationale and vision for creating a curriculum of study that concentrates on the global contributions of people of African descent. Sharing his goals and writings on this dual anniversary were one inspiration behind developing, “Carter G. Woodson: Our Father, Who Art a Negro.”A more imperative motivation for this script is recent social, cultural and political discourse regarding the heritage of African-Americans This script unpacks this discourse through the investigative reporting of host TaMaRah Overton, who asks questions bandied about in headlines, municipal buildings and beauty shops across the county:“What IS Black History? Who should teach it? What should be included? Is it edifying, or separatist? Earnest or commercial? Divisive or inclusive. In short, has the study of Black History outlived its creation?”For answers, TaMaRah not only transcends time to interview Dr, Woodson, she dissects historic and current motives of America’s educational system, and the role of spirituality in shaping that system and American culture at-large. Audience participation encouraged. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events3/banners/ba9c9350-fdca-11f0-942f-d149ae617f16-rimg-w1200-h675-dc020102-gmir.jpg About the SeriesThe Woodson story is one of six plays comprising a touring theater festival called, “Convergence of History: Four Anniversaries, One Faith,” created by KIT Ministries to dramatize the relationship between Black history, Christianity and the development of the United States as the nation approaches its 250th year of declared independence in July 2026.
