- **Event Name**: Information Session on Robinson Huron Treaty Legal Fees Challenge
- **Event Start and End Date**: Mon, 19 Jan, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Mon, 19 Jan, 2026 at 08:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Garden River First Nation will host an important public information session on Monday, January 19, 2026, to provide Robinson Huron Treaty (RHT) beneficiaries with updates on the Robinson Huron Treaty Legal Fees Court Challenge and the next steps that followed the recent court decision.

Garden River First Nation is welcoming Michael Rosenberg and Greg Ringkamp, Partners at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, who have represented both Garden River First Nation and Atikameksheng Anishinabek in advancing the Robinson Huron Treaty Legal Fees Challenge.

The purpose of the session is to explain the origins of the legal challenge, outline the legal timeline, and clarify how the challenge was initiated to protect the interests of treaty beneficiaries.

This information session is intended to help beneficiaries better understand the recent court ruling, its implications, and what lies ahead. All members of Garden River First Nation are encouraged to attend. The invitation is also open to members of all 21 Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations, as well as members of the media.

During the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund (RHTLF) meetings held in Sudbury on January 7 and 8, 2026, Chief Karen Bell introduced several motions aimed at ensuring fairness and accountability in the distribution of funds related to the legal challenge. One motion addressed the proposed return of $250 million to the 21 Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations, representing half of the $500 million legal fees court challenge. Chief Bell put forward a motion advocating that these funds be distributed based on population, rather than being divided equally among the 21 Nations. While the motion was supported by five First Nations, it was defeated when 16 First Nations voted against it.

Under the current RHTLF voting structure, each Nation holds one vote regardless of population size, allowing a numerical majority of Nations to overrule the majority of treaty beneficiaries by population.

“This information session is about transparency, accountability, and ensuring that treaty beneficiaries understand how decisions are being made and how they affect our people,” said Chief Karen Bell. “Our responsibility is to advocate for fairness and to ensure that the voices of the majority of beneficiaries are not lost within the process.”

The January 19 session will provide an opportunity for beneficiaries to hear directly from legal counsel, ask questions, and gain clarity on both the legal process and governance issues surrounding the Robinson Huron Treaty Legal Fees Challenge.
The information session will take place at the Garden River First Nation Recreation Centre, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. Media are welcome to attend.
