- **Event Name**: Car Survival Blanket Quilt Class Series
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 05 Feb, 2026 at 01:00 pm
- **Event Description**: This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Central MN Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation.

Let’s put those woven (not knit) wool garments that are hanging in the back of mom’s or in grandma’s closets to good use! Chances are they are very good quality fabrics and would make a great quilt. The real treasures are skirts and slacks because they easy to take apart. Even a suit jacket has some good usable panels. Heavy wool coats and felted wool is not suitable for this project.

Places to check for wool garments:

Thrift stores

Friends and family

The back of the closet

Estate sales

Then, bring them to the 510 Art Lab for a class on recycling wool clothes. Learn how to take them apart, wash the pieces, and use the wool for a very warn and useful quilt. It can be kept in the car for an emergency, or used as a cozy couch throw for winter evenings.

We will have some clothes for you to add to the pieces you bring, to practice on and get your started the first class session, and to incorporate into your design, so if you can’t find very many, that’s ok - we’ll have some to supplement.

Other things to bring:

A good seam ripper.

Fabric scissors.

If you have a rotary cutter and mat, that can be helpful too.

For the second session, a sewing machine and standard sewing supplies are also needed.

Dark gray thread will be best to bring for all color fabrics.

To make a throw size quilt we will need 5-6 different garments. We can mix and match fabrics and trade part of your pieces with other members in the class.

Dates: Thursdays - Feb 5th, 12th, 19th, (Feb 26th will be a make up class if we have a weather cancellation.)

Time: 1pm - 3pm

What to bring: (See description above)

Level: Beginner + (an advanced beginner, who maybe sewed or quilted once or twice before, or a more avid quilter who simply hasn’t in awhile.)
