Swiss pianist-composer Nik Bärtsch (ECM) has been fusing electronica and minimalism with soul, jazz, funk, Japanese ritual and new classical music with his ensemble Ronin since 2001.
The zen-funk quartet is Nik Bärtsch (piano), Kaspar Rast (drums), Jeremias Keller (Bass) and Sha (reeds). Bärtsch says “Our music is somewhere between jazz and modern composition, progressive pop, ritual music, groove music in general."
Nik Bärtsch, born in Zurich in 1971, is an internationally renowned pianist, composer, producer and founder of the label Ronin Rhythm Records, the Zurich music club EXIL and the indie classical festival Currents Zurich. He records exclusively for ECM records, the internationally renowned German jazz and classical label and his own label and has performed in over 50 countries in clubs, venues and festivals like the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville; San Francisco, London, Berlin, Shanghai and Cape Town Jazz Festivals. His compositions are played by renowned ensembles like The Bang On A Can Ensemble New York, The Third Coast Percussion Group Chicago, The RIAS chamber choir Berlin and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. And he performed with music legend Laurie Anderson in the UK and Germany at classical music festivals.
Ronin's recordings include the ECM albums Stoa (2006), Holon (2008), Llyrìa (2010), Ronin Live (2012), Awase (2018) and Spin (2024).
