From the millions of youngsters who participate and advance through the LOCAL (this event,) district (1/15 Bradenton,) state (2/19 Elks Youth Camp Umatilla/ travel & lodging covered) and regional competition, six national champions are named – one boy and one girl in each of the three categories: ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13.
Eligibility
1. A contestant may only enter one Lodge Hoop Shoot contest.
2. Contestants must be at least 8 and no older than 13 as of April 1, 2022, in order to participate.
3. Regarding eligibility, the Director is responsible only for ensuring that the contestant competes in the correct age-group. Use the Age-Group calculator on the Hoop Shoot website elks.org/hoopshoot to verify age-group assignments before your contestants compete. Contestants who shoot in the wrong age-group will be disqualified.
4. As the Hoop Shoot tournament progresses, contestants may not switch divisions and may not skip levels of the competition. In order to be eligible to advance to the next level of competition, a contestant must have participated in and won the previous level.
5. Contestants will compete in one of six divisions:
Boys ages 8-9, Girls ages 8-9
Boys ages 10-11, Girls ages 10-11
Boys ages 12-13, Girls ages 12-13
If the contestant will be age 7 on April 1, 2022, he/she is too young to participate.
If the contestant will be age 8 or 9 on April 1, 2022, he/she shoots in the 8 to 9 age-group.
If the contestant will be age 10 or 11 on April 1, 2022, he/she shoots in the 10 to 11 age-group.
If the contestant will be age 12 or 13 on April 1, 2022, he/she shoots in the 12 to 13 age- group.
If the contestant will be age 14 on April 1, 2022, he/she is too old to participate.

The grit movement started a few years ago when psychologist Angela Duckworth studied people in challenging situations, including National Spelling Bee participants, rookie teachers in tough neighborhoods, and West Point cadets. Her research suggested that grit was a more accurate predictor of success than social intelligence, good looks, physical health, or IQ. Duckworth explains the premise in this short Ted Talk:

Hate Has No Home in the Hoop Shoot
You don’t have to be the fastest, biggest, or strongest athlete on the court to sink one free throw after another. Practice and precision are the name of the game. When you step up to the free throw line, it should be a level playing field.
The Elks National Foundation and the entire Hoop Shoot team nationwide are committed to making contests fully inclusive, equitable, and safe for all our participants and volunteers. We welcome and encourage all eligible kids to give the Hoop Shoot a shot.
We are all equal at the free throw line. Racism and intolerance have no place in the Hoop Shoot, on or off the court.

Service Scorecard
Take part in the Service Scorecard, a virtual service opportunity that combines the Elks spirit of volunteerism, gritty kids, and fun!
Running from October 2022 - March 2023, each month will feature a new theme and a corresponding set of 10 projects of varying degrees of difficulty and time commitment for participants to complete. Participants will need to complete at least five service projects for the chance to win a $100 donation to a charity of their choice. All participants that complete the scorecard survey before the end of the month will win Hoop Shoot swag and participants that enter in some of their projects will be entered into a raffle for swag!
Use #HoopShootServes on social media to share your progress! Participants that share their journey online will also have the chance to win more prizes.
All ages are welcome to participate! Studies show that service helps kids, families, and everyone to stay engaged with each other and their communities-especially during social distancing. If you've never competed in a Hoop Shoot or if you've been involved with the program for years, the Service Scorecard is for you.
