About the event

Why Medicaid Matters Here
Medicaid Cuts in the Adirondacks

Healthcare professionals are sounding the alarm on the toll that cuts to Medicaid, which are now part of federal law, will have on the North Country.

On Sunday, November 16, at 6:30pm, Adirondack Voters for Change (AVfC) will host members of the Healthcare Coalition for the North Country (HCNC) to describe these cuts and their impact on everyone needing available health care—meaning everyone in the region. The public is invited to join the discussion at the AVfC Community Hub, 28 Broadway in Saranac Lake.

As the largest and most remote region in New York, North Country residents and visitors are served by the most over-stretched health delivery system in the state. Unless remedies can be found, the damage to be expected includes hospital closures and a number of small towns losing all local healthcare services.

The HCNC is a non-partisan group of volunteers that now includes more than 250 physicians and other healthcare professionals, caregivers, concerned citizens, and community leaders. Their mission is to show “Why Medicaid Matters Here” and to arrange assistance for people facing loss of coverage or an unaffordable rise in insurance costs.

The presentation will begin with an overview by Dr. John Rugge, a retired family doctor, founder of Hudson Headwaters Health Network, and state-level policy advisor. Several other Coalition members including Saranac Lake residents will participate as well.

This important discussion coincides with the grand opening of AVfC’s new Community Hub location in Saranac Lake. Adirondack Voters for Change is an issues-based organization promoting change through civic engagement.

“This space will be our home for meetings, gatherings, and civic connection—a place to plan, learn and welcome the community,” according to Board President Kary Johnson. “We are looking forward to the new opportunities that will come from having a physical presence in downtown Saranac Lake.”

Doors for this event will open at 6:00pm with light refreshments provided by Adirondack Voters for Change. The approximately one-hour presentation will begin at 6:30pm with extra time for questions and answers. The presentation will also be available via Zoom. The Healthcare Coalition for the North Country is a nonpartisan group of volunteers dedicated to explaining why Medicaid matters for everyone in the North Country, and to preserving access to health care for all.

We are a group of active and retired healthcare professionals, caregivers, business and community leaders, Medicaid recipients, and other concerned citizens.

Our Coalition formed because we believe it is essential to preserve vital healthcare resources in our region as Medicaid funding reductions are being implemented. We are a non-partisan group. Our objective is educational. Together, we are preparing and will be making presentations for public officials, the news media, and other interested parties. We are also collecting patient stories to help show the need for Medicaid not only with data but also through human experience.
