The capital of Chile is always buzzing with activity and with the new year around the corner, there's so much to do! The temperatures are also warm as Chile is in the southern hemisphere, so you can enjoy a new year in the summer!
There's so much planned - from epic fireworks, dance parties and cocktail nights, all designed to give you the best experience. Chileans have many customs that are sure to keep you entertained - how's wearing yellow underwear for starters? You could also pour a nice glass of cola de mono and ring in the new year with your family.
South America's biggest fireworks display is one decent way to start off your year, right? At Valparaiso, the continent's biggest fireworks display is sure to have you mesmerised. Just two hours from Santiago, the seaside fireworks display over the harbour lasts for about 20 minutes after which the party heads back to the street. This firework display won the Guinness World Record in 2007, with at least 16,000 fireworks set off.
Opposite La Moneda is The Entel Tower, ready to ring in the festivities in style. The fireworks display here is incredible as well and this year promises to be grander! The traditional Chilean way is to bring the family together and enjoying a meal before heading to the streets to enjoy an all-night-long party. As soon as the clock strikes midnight, it is customary to hug someone of the opposite gender.
The Vina Del Mar is another great place where you can catch the massive Valparaiso fireworks from another great vantage point. Relax by the sandy beaches and enjoy a few moments with your family as you witness the wonderful fireworks around. If you're looking for a rare party that's a bit away from the city, the town of Iquique is waiting.
They have their own beach party with a massive fireworks display that's followed by another after party. The after party happens all night long on the streets and beaches all night long. Don't bother clubbing when the outdoor weather's perfect for a street party! The weather's warm all day long, making for a perfect time near the hills.
The national museums are also open all day for you to get a taste of Chile's heritage. The Parque Quinta Normal has many museums, including parks like the Parque Bicenternario. There's also cathedrals like the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago with stunning interiors. You could explore the craft markets and plan out your entire morning with a ride in the cable cars right to the top of Cerro San Cristobal.
The city's skyline has a wonderful backdrop of the Andes mountains and you could head to the hills and click some expansive panoramic pictures.
