Join the local community in helping to clear weeds from the Olympic Median Microforest.About this EventLearn about local native and invasive plants and gain an appreciation for the importance of biodiversity at the Olympic Median Microforest!The Olympic Median Microforest is located on the center median of Olympic Boulevard in Santa Monica between 18th and 19th Street. Inspired by the Miyawaki method of reforestation, the site hosts >750 California native trees, shrubs, and perennials. The microforest was planted in June, 2024, and is expected to be fully established after only two years. Once established, the microforest will increase biodiversity by providing habitat for local flora and fauna, as well as bolster climate resilience by mitigating heat, sequestering carbon, and reducing flood risks associated with stormwater runoff.In the meantime, weeds must be controlled to give the native plants the best shot at long-term survival. That's where YOU come in! Volunteers will learn how to properly identify and remove invasive and/or weedy species while spending time outdoors with like-minded, community-oriented individuals. Please bring long pants, closed-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Tools and snacks will be provided!This is a free monthly event hosted by Urban Greening Fellows from the California Climate Action Corps, an AmeriCorps service program dedicated to mitigating the effects of climate change.
