Lecture by Dr. Carla Sinopoli.Archaeologist and Director of the Maxwell Museum, Dr. Carla Sinopoli will be speaking about the history of the University of New Mexico (UNM) Maxwell Museum of Anthropology as part of the the Southwest Seminars program in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This program is a weekly lecture series held at different hotels.Since its founding by Edgar Lee Hewett in 1932, the UNM Maxwell Museum of Anthropology has played an important role in archaeological research across New Mexico as well as in the training of professional archaeologists. Hewett's role in Albuquerque and Santa Fe also contributed to complex relations between the Maxwell and other New Mexico collecting institutions. In this talk Museum Director Carla Sinopoli will provide an overview of the history, major projects, and current work of the Albuquerque's oldest museum.$20 admission to be paid to Southwest Seminars. Sinopoli joined the University New Mexico as Director of the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and Professor of Anthropology in 2018.  An archaeologist specializing in South Asia, her survey and excavation projects in southern India examine the political economy of the 2nd millennium CE imperial capital of Vijayanagara and emergent sociopolitical inequalities in the second and first millennia BCE Iron Age. In addition to her archaeological work, Sinopoli’s research interests also include the history of university museums and anthropological collecting.  She is the author or editor of 10 books and dozens of articles and her work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for Humanities, National Geographic Society, and Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, among others.Sinopoli came to UNM from the University of Michigan, where she was a professor of anthropology and curator of Asian collections in the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology.  As curator, she conducted research, developed exhibitions, and published on archaeological, ethnographic, and photographic collections from the Indian Himalayas, China, and Southeast Asia.  Her final curatorial project at Michigan was a collaborative co-curated exhibition of Anishinaabe baskets from the Great Lakes that is scheduled to open at the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinaabe Culture and Lifeways in Mount Pleasant Michigan in spring 2019.  In addition to her curatorial work, Sinopoli served as director of the UM Museum of Anthropological Archaeology from 2005-2011 and directed Michigan’s Museum Studies Program from 2012-2018.Since joining UNM in 2018, Sinopoli has overseen the completion of a new strategic plan for the Museum and a successful reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums. She has co-curated or curated three exhibitions including, Cuneiform and Cultural Heritage (2023-24), From Headwaters to Mouth: Additional Amazonian Collection of the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology (2021-22), and Conversing with the Land: Native North American Baskets of the Maxwell Museum Collection (2022-23). Under her leadership, the Museum hired its first NAGPRA coordinator, and the NAGPRA team has now grown to a dedicated staff of five.
