A guitarist, composer, orchestra conductor, lecturer, and teacher, his career has taken him throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean.Of Paraguayan descent, Julio developed a deep connection to the music of legendary Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré, considered one of the greatest composers for the classical guitar. His musical roots run deep. Born in Oakland, California, he began studying guitar at age five with his father, a Paraguayan musical diplomat who had studied with a student of Barrios. He gave his first recital at twelve, and by seventeen was performing the Concierto de Aranjuez with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra.Julio’s musical path also led him into conducting. After serving as principal cellist of the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, he became Assistant Conductor under Kent Nagano and later conducted internationally, including Prince Albert of Monaco’s private orchestra at the Monaco Opera House.In recent years, Julio has played a major role in establishing the Stover Family Archive of Ibero-American Guitar Music, helping preserve important historical works, including those of Barrios. This collection was brought to light through the efforts of Richard “Rico” Stover, often called the “Indiana Jones” of Latin American guitar.Alongside his performing career, Julio has dedicated decades to education, conducting youth orchestras, teaching privately, and presenting lectures on the life and music of Barrios at conservatories, universities, and guitar societies worldwide.Through his performances, Julio brings both the history and spirit of the classical guitar to life.This is a rare opportunity to experience a world-traveled artist in the intimate setting of the La Feliz Room overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
