- **Event Name**: Community Grief and Gratitude Ritual
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 09 Nov, 2025 at 09:30 am – Sun, 09 Nov, 2025 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: A place to honor & give expression to personal & collective love & grief, to give a gift to the holy, accompanied in togetherness and beautyAbout this EventWe gather together at the common well of grief to tend our hearts, sing our tears, be with whatever your particular experience is at this time - whether grief, shame, rage, numbness, fear, joy, resistance - and witness, accompany and have each others back, when, as Martin Prechtel says, ...the grief may be so strong, we fear we might drown and we need to know someone is there to pull us out of the water. These are times marked with grief. So much loss and sorrow in the personal and collective areas of our lives. We are not in this alone. Grief is a given in this life, a natural part of the human experience, meant to be shared with others, not in isolation, and with a ritual container big enough to hold the magnitude of our losses and well as the magnifience of our love and praise.Tending to and metabolizing our grief often transforms into gifts of beauty, action and whole hearted care for our world. It softens our hearts and opens us to our humanity with more capacity to respond to those around us with compassion and wisdom. This ritual is inspired by the Dagara people of West Africa, and we would not be doing this work without being impacted by the work of Sobonfu Some and Malidome Some. We also recognize the Chumash people, on whose land we gather, and all of our ancestral traditional rites and condolence ceremonies from around the world. I have had the great fortune to work with Sobonfu Some, Malidoma Some, and Francis Weller, as well as training in related work with Joanna Macy (Despair and Empowerment/The Work that Reconnects), Deena Metzger (Grief into Vision), Martin Prechtel (Grief and Praise) and other important mentors and teachers.“Coming home to grief is sacred work. a powerful practice that confirms what the indigenous soul knows and what spiritual traditions teach: we are connected to one another. Our fates are bound together in a mysterious but recognizable way. Grief registers the many ways this kinship is assaulted daily. Grief becomes a core element in any peace making practice, as it is a central means whereby our compassion is quickened, our mutual suffering is acknowledged.”— Francis WellerRitual Support TeamAlexis Slutzky, MA, MFT (she/her) is a mentor & guide, facilitator & ceremonialist, writer & speaker working at the confluence of healing and social change. For over twenty years she has been supporting youth and adults, individually and in groups, to reimagine relationships and deepen intimacy with the self, each other, the natural world and mystery. She weaves together years of experience in depth oriented practices and frameworks – including depth psychology, somatic trauma work, mindfulness, ecology, dream work, communal grief practices, ritual and ceremony, wilderness guiding, social justice, permaculture and rites of passage work. With a stellar team of support, she has been convening grief rituals, groups & talks for the past several years.Elisabeth Gonella and others TBAAs a team of primarily white cis-gendered women, with European & Jewish lineages, we are committed to the work of anti-racism, decolonialism and divesting from supremacy culture. We welcome the grief and outrage of our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color community members and aim to cultivate a healing and transformative multi-racial community grieving space of belonging and trust. We also acknowledge our limitations due to the identities through which we experience the world. May we feel our unity in grieving the legacy of colonialism together, and move one step closer to co-liberation.Gift Economy & MoneyThis is a community supported offering, inspired by our capacity for reciprocal gestures of generosity, support and service. It is an experiment in the gift economy, hive mind and living culture. In order to make something like this work, it involves community participation and reciprocity on all levels. Some people support financially at various levels depending on means and inspiration, others help in hands-on practical ways - offering their creativity, skills, presence and heavy lifting, and some contribute on multiple levels, while myself and core team organize and facilitate. We all contribute our care and energy, and are all needed. There is no set fee and no one is turned away for lack of funds. As there are real costs, and this is an exploration in trust, a sliding scale is included below for your reference. It is only a reference and you are not obligated to give at any level. Generally in a sliding scale, the upper tiers of the scale and beyond balance out the lower tiers. The true cost falls somewhere in the middle of the sliding scale range, and includes paying for the venue rental and staff, administration, insurance, maintaining our materials and supplies. We intend to cover the costs with this approach and even have an abundance, in which case your generosity will not only support continuing the accessibilty of this work, we will also gratefully donate to international community peace organizations and local indigenous initiatives.Sliding Scale Donation: >$40 - $120< according to your means and desire. Give what you can, receive what you need. Offer what feels right. We appreciate your honest reflection. This is an opportunity to be in the learning together about reciprocity, giving and receiving and liberated generosity. It requires a commitment and practice of deep listening all around. We hope this model inspires all of us to access our generosity, sense of abundance and community support creating a more equitable, diverse, trusting and sustainable community. We make it happen together.Photo Credit: Christine Gonzol
