ACS/LA Summertime Whale Watching Adventure - 2026September 12th, 8am to 4pmThe ticket price is $189 per person, $179 for ACS members, (plus Eventbrite fees) - and everyone saves $5 if you sign up by August 21st! The trip includes a delicious continental breakfast served onboard.About the trip:We'll head to sea aboard the , a jet-powered catamaran custom built for whale watching. The Santa Barbara Channel is a nutrient rich environment with steep canyon ridges that force cold water to the surface. This upwelling creates a perfect habitat for blue whales, which feed almost exclusively on krill: small shrimp-like organisms especially abundant in the Santa Barbara Channel, particularly along the northern edge of the Channel Islands. Blues sometimes feed near humpbacks and fin whales (which also feed on schooling fish). We could see many other cetaceans including minke whales, dolphin (common, bottlenose, Pacific white-sided, Risso’s, and northern right whale), and Dall's porpoise, plus California sea lions, harbor seals, and elephant seals, and a large variety of seabirds. Also, on board will be guest naturalists narrating our adventure!All of the net proceeds will be used to fund our 2027 research grant!The Condor ExpressWith a specially built wave-piercing hull, the Condor Express provides an exceptionally smooth, stable ride. The vessel features a modified hydrofoil "wing" mounted between the hulls to provide lift to raise the boat at high speed, producing the smooth ride that this design is noted for. Powered by four computer controlled 740Hp Detroit Diesel engines which power high performance Hamilton Water-Jets, the Condor Express is environmentally friendly and safe around marine animals. Additionally, the vessel features walk-around decks, a huge upper sun-deck, a raised forward bow area, a full galley, and continuous side windows in the large comfortable cabin.Guest NaturalistsWe are very happy to welcome Tamara Mason on board with us! She is a returning guest Naturalist who has volunteered with ACS-LA and Cabrillo Marine Aquarium for over 10 years as part of their Whalewatch Naturalist program. Tamara is a certified California Naturalist and also volunteers with California State Parks. She is a member of the Channel Islands Naturalist Corps (CINC) which is a group of volunteer naturalists who are trained with the Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary (part of NOAA) and the Channel Islands National Park. She will be sharing information about the extra special part of the Santa Barbara Channel we will be in and around during our trip on Condor Express. In addition, Tamara is a Naturalist with Cabrillo Whalewatch, sponsored by ACS-LA and Cabrillo Marine Aquarium as well as a Naturalist with ACS-OC. She has volunteered with the ACS-LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project and FLOW, a citizen science project which looks at ocean water quality near Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica. She is a former board member of ACS-LA, the Los Angeles Mycological Society and Long Beach City College Foundation-Fine Arts Association. Matt has been pelagic birding for over twenty years. With the warm water we have been having there have been a fair number of interesting birds in the area and Matt is eager to see what’s out there and point them out to us. As an undergraduate at UC Santa Cruz, he learned the ropes in Monterey Bay and has since been on dozens of pelagic trips throughout northern and central California. After earning a master’s degree at Louisiana State University, Matt is now residing in Ventura, where he has been exploring the waters of the Southern California Bight.
