2018 Utah Fire Fighter Chili Cook Off
The 6th annual Utah Fire Fighter Chili Cook-off is being held on Saturday September 29th, in the west side parking lot, of the Shops at South Town, from 11 am to 4pm.
Fire Fighters, representing their respective agencies and station houses, make up the teams. Teams compete in 4 different categories for year long bragging rights. The categories are: Best Chili (Judges Choice), Best Chili (Peoples Choice), Best Booth and Most Money raised (corporate donations are allowed and encouraged).
Teams earn their votes by sales of the Chili they have created on site, and by encouraging patrons to vote for them. Arm-twisting, begging, and outright bribery (all perfectly legal), are among the tactics use to garner votes.
Booths are created by the teams and reflect the mood of the crews and are used as eye candy to draw onlookers in, to taste their creations. In years past booths have included a functioning fire pole, working emergency lights and sirens, and smoke machines.
All of this is in good fun to raise money for the Utah Burn Camp. The University Health Care Burn Camp Program was established in 1993 to help support burn survivors with the personal challenges associated with surviving a burn injury. Camps provide the tools needed to not only survive injury, but to also thrive in recovery.
Fire Fighters Credit Union will be managing the ticket sales for chili, drinks, and other merchandise. Tickets will be available the day of the event at the cook-off; credit cards and cash are accepted.
All proceeds from ticket sales go to University of Utah Healthcare - The Burn Camp Charity to finance their activities and programs. Last year the cook-off raised over $25,000 and as always, this year Firefighters want to raise much more.
