Why We Run – A Bit of History
The Bun Run commemorates two meaningful events: the Feast of St Bartholomew and the Battle of Sandwich. On that very day in 1217, an English fleet triumphed over the French in a decisive naval battle just off our coast. The spoils of victory were used to fund St Bartholomew’s Chapel and almshouses, which have served Sandwich for over 800 years.
Every year, the town marks the occasion with a chapel service, community gathering, and the delightful children’s Bun Run - a light-hearted race celebrating charity and tradition. After completing a circuit of the chapel each child receives a bun baked by the Hospitalians for the occasion.
Let’s keep the tradition alive and make this year’s Bun Run one to remember.
See you on the 26th!
