Labyrinth Ballroom Dance Series, Monday Evenings, July 14th-August 4, 2025
~YES, YOU CAN LEARN TO WALTZ! We have taught hundreds of people how! ~
This year we are providing a progressive series of historical ballroom dance classes. Although geared for those who are attending the Labyrinth Masquerade Ball* on August 15th and 16th, all are welcome to attend.
For each class, the schedule is as follows:
7:00 PM: Doors open. Socialize and warm up.
7:15 PM: Class starts. Instruction can be anywhere from one to two hours depending on the topic.
Once the class ends, there will be open practice to DJ’d music with instructors available for coaching**.
10:00 pm: Event ends.
The focus of each class is as follows:
Monday, July 14th: Rotary Waltz fundamentals
Monday, July 21st: Intermediate Rotary Waltz techniques.
Monday, July 28th: Polka and Schottische
Monday, Aug 4th: Cross-step Waltz and Musicality
BEGINNERS WELCOME! NO NEED TO BRING A PARTNER!
Students will be rotating dance partners throughout the class. So, there will be plenty of friendly folks to dance with.

SNACKS AND HYDRATION
Please come well fed and expect only light snacks to keep you going throughout the evening. We highly recommend you bring your own water bottle to keep hydrated. Only water is permitted in the dance floor area.
SHOES
The venue requires that you must wear footwear that will protect the 100+ year wooden dance floor. Acceptable footwear includes:
- leather soled shoes
- suede soled shoes
- ballet slippers
- ballroom dance shoes (any kind)
- "character" dance shoes
No "fashion" high heels or spiked heels are allowed whatsoever. They will either damage the floor and/or are dangerous to dance this style in.
Sneakers and rubber-soled shoes *may* be worn if they are covered by a "shoe-sock". If you happen to have socks that can fit over your shoes, that will work. You can also purchase made-for-dancing shoe socks online that are designed for this purpose. We will have a limited supply of shoe-socks on hand if folks need them.
If you are unable to meet the above requirements, as a last resort, you can just dance in your socks - although we do not recommend it as it will be rather punishing for your feet and there is a high risk of injury if you get stepped on.
*If you are not wearing appropriate footwear, you will be turned away.*
If you are interested in purchasing dance shoes, we recommend Very Fine Shoes in El Monte which sells appropriate dance shoes in a wide variety of styles at reasonable prices.
COSTUMES
For those attending Labyrinth, you are welcome to wear your costume or pieces thereof to practice moving in them on the dance floor. This is especially important for folks that are considering having large headdresses, wings, trains, or other accessories that may stick out or drag.

** It's unusual to have instructors available during the social dancing portion after class — that kind of support typically ends with the lesson. But for this special series leading up to Labyrinth, our instructors have generously offered to stay and provide additional guidance. It's a wonderful opportunity to continue learning and refining your dancing in a relaxed setting with coaching available.
