Sifting through the writer’s archives at Princeton, Barrera is repeatedly thwarted in her attempt to fully know her subject. Traditional means of research—the correspondence, photos, and books—serve only to complicate and cloud the woman and her work. The Queen of Swords is a portrait of a woman that also serves as an alternative history of Mexico City; a cry-out for justice; and an homage to the unknowable. It transcends mere biography, supplanting something tidy and authoritative for a sprawling experiment in understanding.Published in tandem with The Queen of Swords, The Week of Colors makes the short stories of Elena Garro, the “cursed mother of magical realism” (El Mundo), available in English for the first time. With The Week of Colors, Elena Garro laid the groundwork for the literary movements that would shape the landscape of Latin American fiction and beyond. Here you’ll find the early roots of magical realism, feminist horror, and anticolonial speculative fiction. In this volume, Garro highlights the violence in our history, our homes, and our hearts, in vivid color. - **Event URL**: https://allevents.in/san-francisco/the-queen-of-swords-jazmina-barrera-and-megan-mcdowell-on-elena-garro/100001867450858789 - **Event Categories**: art, literary-art - **Interested Audience**: - total_interested_count: 0 ## Ticket Details - **Ticket Price Range**: min: 0, max: 0, currency: USD ## Event venue details - **city**: San Francisco - **state**: CA - **country**: United States - **location**: Medicine for Nightmares - **lat**: 37.7527692 - **long**: -122.4127251 - **full address**: Medicine for Nightmares, 3036 24th Street, San Francisco, United States ## Event gallery - **Alt text**: The Queen of Swords: Jazmina Barrera and Megan McDowell on Elena Garro - **Image URL**: https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events7/banners/e06fc51104e9b4f206be865c9f9463031c10d5f5d7e997873080d1aa00f7210d-rimg-w1200-h600-dcad8035-gmir.jpg?v=1761804527 ## FAQs - **Q**: When and where is The Queen of Swords: Jazmina Barrera and Megan McDowell on Elena Garro being held? - **A:** The Queen of Swords: Jazmina Barrera and Megan McDowell on Elena Garro takes place on Wed, 19 Nov, 2025 at 07:00 pm to Wed, 19 Nov, 2025 at 08:00 pm at Medicine for Nightmares, 3036 24th Street, San Francisco, United States. - **Q**: Who is organizing The Queen of Swords: Jazmina Barrera and Megan McDowell on Elena Garro? - **A:** The Queen of Swords: Jazmina Barrera and Megan McDowell on Elena Garro is organized by Center for the Art of Translation - Programs. - **Q**: Who is this event for?
