The United Nations Association of San Francisco is hosting this important conversation as part of its 2025 Human Rigths Day Program.
We will explore the need for an international law regarding wrongful convictions and global standards to guarantee that everyone has access to justice and the application of the Scandinavian model of justice.
In the US, we have only one state that has an independent Review Commission for wrongfully convicted appeals. That state is North Carolina, and our speaker Jamie Lau worked on the formation of this commission. In other states, appeals are dealt within their respective courts, including the Calfornia Racial Justice Act that provides additional access to appeal racially unjust charges, sentences, and convictions in the California courts.
Prepare for this conversation by reviewing the short film, .The United Nations and the Global Innocence Movement: Filling the Innocence Gap in International Law
