- **Event Description**: Emerging filmmakers connect with working professionals, festival programmers, and university reps in small-group roundtable conversations.About this EventThe RS College and Career Readiness Roundtables brings together Reel Stories students, alumni, and community members with working filmmakers, festival programmers, broadcasters, and university representatives for small-group, roundtable-style conversations about pathways into the industry and higher education.Instead of a single panel talking at attendees, participants rotate through roundtables to ask questions, get feedback on their own work or plans, and hear directly from people who've navigated the paths they're considering - whether that's film school, a filmmaking collective, festival programming, or working professionally in mediamaking. The goal is to demystify next steps for young and emerging filmmakers, especially those without industry connections or a clear sense of what college or career pathways look like in this field, and give Reel Stories community members a chance to build real relationships with people and organizations they can stay connected to.How the evening worksFirst hour: College-focused roundtables with university and program representatives.Break: 20-30 minutes.Second hour: Industry-focused roundtables with filmmakers, festival programmers, and collectives.Who it's forThis event is open to women/girls, gender-expansive folks, and queer people ages 16 and up who identify as emerging filmmakers. Why it mattersWhen women and gender-expansive people are better represented behind the scenes in the media, they will be better reflected on the screen. This event is one more way we're building the relationships and roadmaps that get Reel Stories student's there.ApplyingBefore the event, we'll send a link where you can submit any materials you'd like reviewed. "description": "For over 20 years, BAVC Media Youth and Emerging Media Makers Programs (YEMM) have been local and national models in the field of media arts and education. YEMM Programs equip young people ages 12-25 with the skills and experience they need to create media that matters to them and focuses on their social change goals. We prepare our participants to enter the digital media workforce on pathways to finding sustainable employment in high-wage, high demand occupations, while developing a personal creative practice. Students gain marketable technical skills through hands-on, project-based coursework, taught by working professionals using industry-standard equipment. In addition to rigorous technical training and career readiness coaching, students are taught essential soft skills, like communication, teamwork, leadership, and conflict resolution. Most notably, participants learn how to tell stories in the digital realm using their diverse life experiences as the foundation of their creative expression. BAVC Media’s YEMM programs are distinguished in their dedication to creating a safe, supportive, and culturally conscious environment for young voices to thrive, through embodying a social justice framework and prioritizing community building. In early 2021 Reel Stories merged with BAVC Media to provide filmmaking programming through a gender equity lens. Reel Stories offers school year and summer programming for girls, young women, and nonbinary people. As with all BAVC Media programs our focus is on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We recruit, enroll, and support participants from communities traditionally left out of media making ensuring that we are developing creative artists from a range of backgrounds."
