About this Event

Join Heather Knight, San Francisco bureau chief at the New York Times, in conversation with Marisa Lagos, California Politics and Government Correspondent at KQED, on the wide array of news topics that makes the City by the Bay at the epicenter of change and innovation. From the city's new leadership, to the Golden State Valkyries' record-breaking first season, to urban coyotes, news coverage of San Francisco captures the intricacies of a city that is a cornerstone of culture, commerce, and politics on the West Coast. Knight and Lagos will discuss her breadth of work and what’s unique about the San Francisco beat through her own unique, smart and captivating lens.

About the Speakers

Heather Knight is the San Francisco bureau chief at the New York Times. Knight worked for more than two decades at The San Francisco Chronicle, including as a City Hall reporter and later as a columnist, where she focused on holding city officials accountable and tried to shine a light on real people and their problems. Knight won the 2022 Scripps Howard Award for Excellence in Opinion Writing, and was named the top columnist by the California News Publishers Association and the Best of the West journalism competition. Knight grew up in Davis, California, and graduated from Stanford University. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and their two sons.

Marisa Lagos is a correspondent for KQED’s California Politics and Government Desk and co-hosts the award winning show and podcast, Political Breakdown. At KQED, Lagos also conducts reporting, analysis and investigations into state, local and national politics for radio, TV, online and on stage. In 2022, she and Scott Shafer moderated the only gubernatorial debate in California. In 2020, the Washington Post named her one of the top political journalists in California; she was nominated for a Peabody and won several other awards for her work investigating the 2017 California wildfires. She has worked at the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner and Los Angeles Times. A UC Santa Barbara graduate, she lives in San Francisco with her two sons and husband.
