About the Artist
Praised in International Piano Magazine as “unusual for a player of his age and an excellent augury for the future,” Hugo Kitano has been the first prizewinner of numerous national and international competitions, including the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition and the Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition.
In June 2019, he won third prize at the San Jose International Piano Competition, also receiving awards for Best Bay Area Contestant, Best Performance of a Beethoven Sonata, and Best Performance of a Romantic Work.
Hugo was the highest prizewinner of the Moscow International Frederic Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in 2014 and a five-time recipient of the Chopin Foundation Scholarship for young pianists. He has also appeared as a soloist with the Stanford Symphony Orchestra and the South Carolina Philharmonic.
Born in New York City and raised in San Francisco, Hugo began piano studies at age six. He earned his Artist Diploma at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto, studying with John Perry and David Louie, and holds undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Music from Stanford University. He currently studies with Awadagin Pratt and is a founding engineer at Chalk AI, a local tech startup.
Please join us for an afternoon or evening of masterworks performed by an exceptional artist on a historic instrument that continues to sing through a new chapter of Brani Piano Art Atelier’s Larkin Street venue. A light reception will follow each performance.
