About this Event

Join award winning KALW radio host, podcaster and voice actor Hana Baba as she tells Folktales from Sudan- the stories she grew up with in her Sudanese American home. Bring the whole family for an uplifting afternoon of stories, songs with live musical accompaniment by oud musician Ahmed Alejail, and community - live at KALW's 220 Montgomery events studio.

Through engaging storytelling, Hana introduces audiences to magical tales from a rich East African tradition— stories that build empathy, curiosity, and a love for global cultures. Now more than ever, hearing stories about different cultures is essential. Folktales from Sudan makes it fun and exciting through timeless stories that inspire understanding and connection.

Hana Baba is an award-winning radio journalist- host of "Crosscurrents"- the daily newsmagazine of NPR station KALW Public Radio in San Francisco.

Hana is also co-hosts and co-creator of the award-winning and podcast The Stoop, which tells stories from across the Black diaspora. Her work also appears on NPR, PRI, BBC, TED and more.

A daughter of Sudanese immigrants, she explores intersectionality, and the rich and varied life experiences within African diaspora communities.

About Folktales From Sudan

Drawing from her roots in Sudan and her career in audio journalism, Hana Baba brings Sudanese folktales to life with authenticity and heart. With Folktales from Sudan, she embarks on a deeply personal journey to preserve and share her folktale heritage, as war ravages Sudan’s cultural archives.This unique series is designed to connect Sudanese diaspora families with their rich cultural heritage through timeless folktales translated to English, with touches of Sudanese Arabic. These tales, brimming with wise kings, brave daughters, mischievous animals, and haunting ogres, transported her into magical worlds using nothing but the power of voice and imagination.With Folktales from Sudan, Baba seeks to protect these invaluable pieces of heritage and share them with younger generations, ensuring they remain a vibrant part of the Sudanese identity.



There is a $10 - $20 sliding scale suggested donation for this event. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

  • The event space is just to the left of the main entrance to the Mills Building at 220 Montgomery Street
  • We recommend taking BART/MUNI, exiting at Montgomery, and walking two blocks north
  • Ride-shares can drop off and pick up directly in front of the venue
  • If you drive, there are several garages within two blocks of the event location; free street parking is available across from the venue on weekends.
