What gets covered, who gets heard, and what can thoughtful music reporting tell us about the culture we share?We’ll hear how local reporters find stories, decide what’s worth covering, and think about their role in documenting a rapidly changing music scene.Just as importantly, this is a chance for music fans to have a voice. He authored the award-winning , and . He has written for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, The Guardian, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many more. She's been covering the arts in the Bay Area for over a decade, with a focus on music, queer culture, labor issues and grassroots organizing. She has edited KQED story series such as Trans Bay: A History of San Francisco's Gender-Diverse Community, and co-created KQED's Bay Area hip-hop history project, That's My Word. She regularly appears on podcasts and radio programs, including NPR’s All Songs Considered, and hosts live events where music, culture and conversation meet. He has been writing about music for over 25 years, and since 2013, he has organized over 100 gatherings dedicated to left-field electronic music. His writing has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, KQED, SF Weekly, Resident Advisor, FACT Magazine, XLR8R, and beyond, with recent essays in the electronic music anthologies No Tags Vol. 1 and Writing on Raving. He is a radio DJ, journalist, and writer that is always looking for sounds that take him far but hold him close. He is the host of "Vinelands", the local music show on KEXP alongside SF indie rock legend Kelley Stoltz. He also explores “the threads of sound” on his Lower Grand Radio show "Garment". He writes the music column, "Sound Ward", for the Bay Area Current that explores the intersections of labor, music, and Bay Area politics. He is the recipient of the Jubilee Fellowship at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and was in the first graduating cohort of the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies program at UC Santa Cruz. His piece on death and heavy music is a finalist for the 2025 Student Media Production Awards.
