Ideas for effective play and expressive methods that appeal to tweens and teens based on brain science are offered so that clinicians may apply the ideas directly to their practices. The information provided can be used across various cultural and ethnic populations within the tween-age and teen-age groups, 9-12 and 13-18 years, respectively. A demonstration with application of the methods will be given. The methods include using play therapy, art, music, dance, drama, sandtray, and nature-based play therapy to be used in sessions along with hands-on experiential practice. The goal is to aid clinicians in creatively serving their tween and teen clients toward meeting their treatment plan objectives and ultimately toward greater healing. Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to describe...Describe play and expressive therapy best practices that include explaining to tweens/teens and guardians the benefits, limitations, and the standard of care needed for effective sessions.List at least 3 necessary best practice components to sufficiently provide play and expressive therapy for tweens and teens.Explain at least 3 developmental theories focused on tweens and teens and how that shows up in play and expressive therapy.Describe the importance of understanding brain development to better provide play and expressive therapy methods that meet the developmental needs of the tween and teen brain.Integrate the therapeutic powers of play used for regulation into play and expressive therapy practice.Demonstrate 3 play and expressive arts techniques that can be used in sessions for tweens and teens. Dr. Anderson served as assistant professor of counselor education at the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) for three years. She is currently working part-time for UTPB teaching counseling courses and overseeing the play therapy certificate program that she implemented. Dr. Anderson is a licensed professional counselor supervisor who has worked as a solo practitioner in private practice where she offered play therapy services in a rural community. She was awarded the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award from the Texas Association for Play Therapy in 2023. She specializes in play therapy and sandtray as a registered play therapist supervisor and a registered sand therapist consultant and trainer. Cynthia has treated children and adolescents in practice for many years, along with their families, in person and via a tele-mental health platform. Dr. Anderson cares about service, community, and helping families connect. Her research agenda is focused on children’s mental health needs and she is a published author in this and other areas.
