- **Event Description**: Join Loftus Accord Walking Group on Thursday 12 June for a 5 mile walk to visit the old Loftus Alum Quarries located on the cliffs north of Loftus.

The alum quarry and processing works operated for over 200 years, closing in 1866.There are still some remains of the alum works to be seen, in a very barren, almost lunar landscape.
We will meet at Loftus Town Hall for a 10.30am start

We will walk to Hummersea and then take a path east, to the quarry site. 

The walk leader, Alan Jones , who has a keen interest in local history , will be stopping from time to time to share information about the alum industry and the impact on Loftus and the heritage of the surrounding area.

There will be a short break for refreshments at the quarry site, so please bring a packed lunch and plenty of fluids.

The walk will then return to Loftus via part of the Cleveland Way along the cliff top. 

Walkers need to be aware the quarry site is very uneven, and there is a very steep climb to get out of the quarry. 

Walkers are asked to dress appropriately for the uneven ground and weather conditions on the day.

Please note, as the site is on the cliff edge and the exit is steep, dogs are not permitted on this walk.

A voluntary donation of £3.00 per adult towards the running costs of the group would be appreciated.

Loftus is well-served by  a couple of excellent cafes  and good free parking facilities .
