- **Event Description**: EDGAR HANN, “the button accordion man from Newfoundland” is of Mi’kmaq ancestry traced back to 1754. Born and raised in the little town of Trout River on the west coast of Newfoundland, his family was self- supporting, living off the land – hunting, fishing, berry-picking and working in the woods. Like most Newfoundlanders, Edgar eventually had to leave home to find work in Ontario and the Maritimes but returns every summer to play music and work on the house he built in the 1970s.

A singer-songwriter and member of SOCAN, Edgar recorded four CDs in Nova Scotia. He’s self-taught on the accordion and plays entirely by ear, having started playing at 12 years old on a little 4-stop Hohner button accordion of his father’s.
Newfoundland didn’t join Canada until 1949 so its Indigenous history is very different from the rest of Canada. There was only one reserve, one residential school, and no land-surrender treaties were signed as in other parts of Canada. 

Edgar is joined by his music and life partner, Em Walker on the Newfoundland ugly stick (made by Edgar), guitar and vocals; with Bill Steiner on bass and Wilf Davies on keyboard. They’ll be playing Edgar’s original songs, jigs and waltzes, along with English & Irish music brought by settlers beginning in the 1600s and ‘newfoundlandized’.
