Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This Third Saturday you’ll create your own text-based art. 
 
The UMFA is honored to currently have Hank Willis Thomas’s "Pitch Blackness / Off Whiteness" on loan from Art Bridges Foundation. This incredible neon artwork is on view in the lobby and is one of the first things you see when you enter the Museum. Thomas’s neon artworks use wordplay to spark questions about the construction of language and how it shapes our perceptions of race and society. "Pitch Blackness / Off Whiteness" turns the adjectives “off-white” and “pitch-black” into the nouns “whiteness” and “blackness.” 

Get inspiration from this work of neon letters as well as other text-based art in the Museum, then head to the classroom to create your own word art on canvas!
