"description": "The Scaffold Theatre Company gets its name from the passage below.\r\nHENRY V – Prologue – Chorus:\r\nBut pardon, and gentles all, The flat unraised spirits that have dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object . . .\r\nIn the play, the Chorus continues the speech, enticing the audience to use their imaginations, turning what can only be presented as a “scaffold” of a story into a living, breathing adventure: \r\nPiece out our imperfections with your thoughts . . . Think when we talk of horses, that you see them Printing their proud hoofs i' the receiving earth.\r\nAs in Shakespeare’s time, the Scaffold Theatre will use minimal props, costumes, and sets in our productions. This choice is made to emphasize the acting and the dynamic relationships between characters in which sit the heart of a play. Our repertoire will consist of classic plays ranging from the 1950’s through ancient Greek Theatre, including Shakespeare, Shaw, Ibsen, Beckett, etc. We are also committed to color-blind, gender-blind, and age-blind casting. We do this in effort to find the most skilled actor for the role—avoiding “type casting”—which again puts the focus on the acting and strengthens the delivery of the play. \r\nIt is our dream to be the resident theatre company of the Eccles Theatre in Salt Lake City and to tour nationally and internationally with our productions. Also, like in Shakespeare’s time, we aim to have a company of highly-trained, salaried actors from which we cast our productions. Such theater companies are now a rare exception. However, in the ballet world, companies following this model abound. We look to reinstate this model for theatre as well, including providing an acting conservatory which trains young people and older actors alike to fit themselves for the demands of working for the Scaffold Theatre."
