Meet at the Zoo at 2:30pm.(There are two groups planned for this trip: Team A & Team B. Team B (this sign-up) will conduct a night-survey on Tuesday and Team A will leave earlier in the day and conduct a day survey at the same site. If you would prefer to leave earlier in the day and do a day survey, return to the collection and find the Team A (ride with Zoo) sign-up page). Check out the schedules (scroll down) on each sign-up page for exact details)Transportation: Depart from Utah's Hogle Zoo. Ride in Zoo vehicle. Leave your car in our secure employee lot. Drive is about 1.5-2 hrs from the Zoo.How to get to : As you head east on Sunnyside Avenue, the main entrance to the Zoo will be on your right. Take your first right immediately after the Zoo onto Crestview Drive and then, again, your first right onto Wasatch Drive. The gate to our staff lot will be on your right just after the bamboo covering ends on the chain link fence. Zoo staff will let you in.Difficulty: Up to 8/10, variable hiking conditions. This trip is best suited for intermediate to experienced hikers. The hike from camp into the main survey site is short but steep (~1 mi with ~700ft elevation change one way) and off trail. We will do this hike to and from the survey site at least once per day (can optionally choose to do it twice). Once at the site, we will spend survey time on our feet, walking on uneven terrain for most of the day. Lunch and rest breaks in scenic places of course!Difficulty rating 1-10:1 - easy, little elevation gain, on-trail, short distance hiking10 - hard, significant elevation gain, uneven terrain, off-trail, dense vegetation, long distance hikingWhat to pack/wear:Comfortable hiking and camp clothes you don't mind getting wet/dirty. Rain jacket (rain pants if you have them), extra socks (keep 1-2 pairs in your daypack everyday), warm layers for night that you can shed during the way, and sun protection (hat, glasses). Light weight hiking pants/work pants recommended instead of shorts. We will be walking, crouching, & squatting in dense vegetation (willows). Some prefer to wear light weight long sleeves to protect them from getting scratched.
