This four week, interdisciplinary series with Carina & Briana will explore the importance of act creation in performance, providing participants with an in-depth understanding of how music, theatrics, and choreography come together to form a cohesive, impactful act. Through hands-on exercises, participants will gain practical tools for creating dynamic performances, regardless of the specific medium. By engaging in musical, theatrical, and choreographic aspects of act creation, participants will develop a deeper understanding of the interplay between these elements and their contribution to the overall performance. Join us for all four sessions, or come when you're able - May 18th, 25th, June 2nd and 9th. Both adults and kids welcome!
Learning Objectives:
Understand the importance of the process of act creation in performance and its role in delivering a compelling narrative.
Explore how musical elements such as rhythm, key changes, and dynamics can shape mood, character, and inform choreographic and expressive choices.
Discover theatrical techniques that enhance dramatic storytelling and amplify the performer/audience connection.
Experiment with choreographic components such as speed, quality of movement, skills and transitions, and how they support narrative and emotiveness.
Apply the integration of music, theater, and choreography to create original acts and perform them to a live audience.
More about Carina and Briana:
Briana Gillet and Carina Gillet are a creative duo based in Salt Lake City, Utah, whose interdisciplinary practices explore the fusion of music, circus arts, and human expression.
Briana, a French-American trumpet player, is dedicated to reimagining performance through cross-medium collaborations. Her work spans classical, contemporary, and electronic music, with recent projects integrating electro-acoustic sound, circus arts, dance, and cinematography. A founding member of the Bridger Brass Quintet, Briana also performs with the NYC-based Chrysalis Rock Orchestra. She has performed across the U.S., Europe, and South America, earning recognition for her innovative approach to music and performance. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Utah.
Carina, a nonbinary circus artist, specializes in straps, partner acrobatics, and integrating music into circus performances. Their experience with companies such as Cirque Us, Cirque Dream, and Cirque Musica has shaped their practice, focusing on the interconnectedness of the arts and the necessity of human expression. Carina’s performances combine acrobatics, music, and emotional storytelling, engaging audiences in a unique, immersive experience.
Together, Briana and Carina’s practice seeks to break down traditional boundaries between disciplines, creating performances that transcend the conventional separation between music, movement, and other art forms.
