Have you ever wanted to learn to sew? Afraid to try it on your own? Join Carol Salloum (member artisan Mercer & Milliner) as she teaches you the basics of sewing. Carol Is a master seamstress and makes beautiful clothes, costumes, and accessories. She will teach you what you need to know to begin a creative journey of your own.
She will cover the basics:
*Fiber content of your material as well as type of material
*Cutting and marking
*Sewing machine needles
*Sewing machine threads
*Tools for holding your fabric together while sewing – pins, clips,
etc.
*Other handy tools
*Winding your bobbin and threading your machine
*Sewing straight lines and corners
*Pressing and Ironing during construction
You will receive the following:
*A booklet to take home covering the basics listed above.
*A kit with sewing basics such as marking chalk, pins, clips, seam ripper, bodkin, snips, measuring tape and a magnetic pin holder
*Kit of fabric pre-cut to make a pressing aide in class (to substitute for a sleeve board).
*Kit of fabric pre-cut to make a Japanese style tote bag in class, plus access to my thread stash to pick thread to use during class for this project.
*Instruction booklets for both projects to take home so you can make them again.
Please bring the following:
*Your sewing machine (or email us at c291dGhlYXN0bWVyY2FudGlsZTIwMjQgfCBnbWFpbCAhIGNvbQ== if you want to use one of our machines for the class there are a total of 3 available)
*An old magazine that you no longer want
*Your reading glasses if needed
*Sewing scissors
*A bag lunch (or plan to get food from a local eatery)
Class will start with a discussion of the basics. Short break. Next, we will each thread every different kind of machine at class to get an understanding of similarities and differences between makes and models of sewing machines. Break for Lunch. Set up and sew pressing aide and stuff with the magazine you brought. Short break. Sew a Japanese style tote bag, use the pressing aide you just finished making for construction of tote bag. End with class photos!
