Bio:
In the late 1960s and early '70s, a beloved tradition took root in Salina, Kansas — Daddy Bud Day. Founded by John “Daddy Bud” Curtis (Cash's grandfather), this annual July 4th celebration was a vibrant, free block party for the Black community, though everyone was welcome. Held at the Carver Center — once home to the city's segregated swimming pool — Daddy Bud Day was a heartfelt expression of unity, joy, and generosity.
Out of his own pocket, Daddy Bud covered the cost of food and drinks, creating a space where families and neighbors could come together in celebration. The festivities didn’t stop at the block party — the day would end with a lively evening dance, bringing the community closer through music and movement.
Though Daddy Bud passed in 1971, his legacy lived on for a few more years, with the final Daddy Bud Day held in 1974.
50 years later — it's back. The 3rd edition of the new "Daddy Bud Day is free and open to the community (read: EVERYONE is invited), at Pacific Park, a park that is soon to be named in his honor, Curtis Park.
