Join Heritage Trails Park District to experience maple tree tapping & sap collection at the E.J. Mackenbach Preserve!

All ages are welcome! Participants will learn:
-why trees produce sap
-the history of maple syrup production
-how to select the best tree for tapping
-when & how to insert a tap into the tree trunk and the supplies needed for sap collection
-methods used to turn sap into delicious maple syrup

Participants will also get to observe an extensive private collection of antique tree taps, including one crafted from a wooden branch and once used by Native Americans. Finally, enjoy a taste-test of genuine maple syrup, harvested right here in Ohio! 

Plan to meet Saturday, February 28th at 10:00am and park at the Dr. Elizabeth Yahl Kuffner Nature Preserve, located at 14840 County Rd. 66A, St. Marys, Ohio. Park District staff will provide a short introduction followed by a hike across the street to the wooded trails of E.J. Mackenbach Preserve. This program will be conducted entirely outdoors, so please dress warmly & wear sturdy hiking boots.

Important notes: PARKING IS EXTREMELY LIMITED and first come, first serve. Once the Kuffner Preserve parking lot is full, we have reached our maximum occupancy for this program. The program is also weather-permitting. In order for maple tree sap to flow, temperatures must rise above freezing during the day and fall below freezing at night. Please stay tuned to our Facebook page and website for announcements or changes the week of the program.
