New York-based Ruckus is a baroque band with a fresh, visceral approach to early music. The ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music, creating a unique sound of “rough-edged intensity” (New Yorker). Ruckus’ first album, an acclaimed collaboration with Emi Ferguson of Bach Sonatas and Preludes, debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts.
Ruckus plays with the energetic ferocity of a rock band. Most early music groups feature instruments like the harpsichord and the viola da gamba, and Ruckus does too, but you’ll also hear synthesizer, guitar, bassoon, bass, and Near Eastern frame drums. In this program, they will perform Strawberry Fields, a joyous feast of rustic dances from the 18th century, featuring Ignatius Sancho’s Twelve Country Dances for the Year 1779 and George Frideric Handel’s Op. 5 Trio Sonatas—all arranged with their signature groove. The program features Rachell Ellen Wong (violin) and Emi Ferguson (flute).
This evening’s program will include:
Ignatius Sancho’s “Lady Mary Montagu’s Reel,” “Culford Heath Camp,” “Ruffs and Rhees”
Handel’s Trio in G, Op. 5, No. 4—Tempo Ordinario, Allegro, Passacaille, Gigue, Minuet
Sancho’s “Air,” “Bushy Park,” “Lord Dalkeith’s Reel,” “Le Douze de Décembre”
Handel’s Trio in E Minor, Op. 5, No. 3—Andante Larghetto, Allegro, Sarabande, Allemande, Rondeau, Gavotte
Sancho’s “The Royal Bishop,” “Lindrindod Lasses,” “Strawberries and Cream”
