Dès les années 1920, des musiciens sud-africains s’approprient le jazz américain. D’abord imité, puis profondément mêlé aux traditions locales, ce langage musical donne naissance à un style unique, vibrant et profondément ancré dans l’histoire de l’Afrique du Sud.

Au début des années 1960, alors que le régime de l’apartheid se durcit, la créativité artistique est muselée. Certains musiciens choisissent alors l’exil, parmi lesquels le trompettiste Hugh Masekela. Avec d’autres figures majeures comme Dollar Brand / Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba ou Chris McGregor, ils deviennent les voix d’une résistance musicale et humaine face au racisme institutionnalisé.

À travers un hommage puissant à Hugh Masekela et à ses confrères, Sounds of Shebeen raconte l’histoire d’un peuple opprimé mais résolument résistant, porté par une musique ardente, festive et engagée, en quête de liberté.
