Many children enjoy animals, birds, butterflies, and spending time outdoors. But have they ever stopped to consider how people and wildlife share the same spaces—or how our everyday choices can affect the plants and animals living around us?
This question is at the heart of our new Backyard Wildlife Stewards course at Morning Glory Homestead Farm.
Led by Tony and Belinda Jones, retired homeschool parents of five and certified Master Naturalists, this course combines environmental science, nature study, conservation education, citizen science, and creative expression to help students develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Instruction incorporates ideas and activities inspired by Project WILD, Project Learning Tree, Clemson Extension 4-H, the South Carolina Native Plant Society, and other respected environmental education organizations that encourage students to become informed and engaged stewards of the natural world.
Throughout the semester, students will explore the fascinating relationship between people and nature. They will learn how wildlife depends on food, water, shelter, and space, and how communities can be designed in ways that either support or diminish those essential habitat needs. Through observation, journaling, outdoor investigations, habitat projects, and citizen science activities, students will discover practical ways to create and improve spaces for wildlife, even in small areas such as a backyard, neighborhood common area, or apartment complex landscape.
Students will strengthen scientific observation skills by collecting and recording data, identifying plants and animals, monitoring seasonal changes, and documenting their findings through field journals. They will also engage in art-based activities, including nature sketching and illustrated journaling, which encourage them to slow down, observe carefully, and develop a greater appreciation for the details of the natural world.
The course also expands beyond the backyard to examine conservation efforts throughout our coastal communities. Students will learn about organizations and community leaders working to preserve wildlife habitat, protect natural resources, and ensure that future generations continue to enjoy healthy ecosystems. Through field experiences, guest speakers, and discussions, they will gain a better understanding of the challenges and successes involved in conservation work.
Perhaps most importantly, this course encourages students to think critically. Rather than simply learning facts, they will ask questions, make observations, collect information, evaluate solutions, and consider how thoughtful decisions can lead to healthier habitats and stronger communities.
At Morning Glory Homestead Farm, we believe children are capable of much more than simply learning about conservation—they can begin practicing it. Backyard Wildlife Stewards helps students recognize that they are not too young to care for wildlife, improve habitats, participate in citizen science, and become active stewards of the natural world around them.
Registration is now open for Fall 2026, and we look forward to helping students discover how curiosity, knowledge, creativity, and stewardship can work together to make a lasting difference.
