Workshop Brainstorming Ideas
1. SAVE Act & Voter Readiness Clinic
The Issue: The SAVE Act (introduced in 2024 and reintroduced in 2025) would require documentary proof of citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to register or update voter records.
Target Audience: This heavily affects married women (80% of whom have name-mismatch issues on birth certificates), students, and the transgender community.
Action Item: Host a "Document Prep" session. Help attendees identify if their current ID matches their citizenship proof. Provide resources for ordering certified birth certificates or applying for passports.
2. Transgender Name & Gender Marker Change Clinic
Legal Guidance: Partner with organizations like OutFront Minnesota or Central Minnesota Legal Services to provide pro-bono assistance.
Minnesota Requirements:
Residency: Must be an MN resident for 6 months.
Witnesses: Requires two adult witnesses who have known the applicant for at least a year.
Fees: Typically around $300, but low-income individuals can apply for an In Forma Pauperis (IFP) fee waiver.
Clinic Goal: Walk attendees through the petition forms and explain how to update their sex marker (M, F, or X) on MN IDs, which is currently self-designated.
3. Voter Registration & "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV)
Secretary of State Resources: Utilize free, nonpartisan materials from the MN Secretary of State Outreach Toolkit.
DFL & Local Politics: Connect with the Stearns County DFL for partisan GOTV strategies, volunteer training, and canvassing maps specific to the St. Cloud area.
Voter 101: Include a "Know Your Rights" segment covering absentee voting, same-day registration, and assistance for voters with disabilities.
