Mozart’s Mass in C Minor is a wonderful example of looking back to go forward, which is the theme of St Albans Choral Society’s concert. Nico Muhly’s stunning Preservation concerns itself with the lineage of the children of Israel - a meditative look back down the ages and a prayer for the continuation of bountiful increase. Stravinsky’s remarkable Pulcinella Suite is one of the first ’new-classical’ pieces of music, taking themes from baroque composer Pergolesi and translating them into a perennially fresh sound world. The concert opens with homage to Mozart’s baroque influence: Handel’s almighty Zadok the Priest.

 Between 1782 and 1783, a 26-year old Mozart did what almost every classical musician does at some point in their development: he discovered the music of J.S. Bach and, along with it, the equally extraordinary work of Handel. The Mass in C Minor (often fittingly called the Große mass or ‘Great’ Mass) carries the influence of these baroque masters and has the DNA of the Bach B Minor and Messiah in its scope and musical content. It is full of drama and invention: a soprano solo part written explicitly to show off with its numerous cadenzas but also divine simplicity; ecstatic exaltation both hushed and shouted in the Gloria and Credo; and intricate, colourful orchestral writing
