Merridee Joan Smith Eco-Printing Workshop: Botanical Printing on Silk and Wool

SCTA is pleased to be offering the workshop, "Botanical Printing on Silk and Wool” by Auburn textile artist Merridee Joan Smith on the weekend of September 3 and 4, 2016, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. Botanical, or eco-printing, produces lovely prints on fabric using plant materials found growing in our forests and back yards. This is a fascinating process with much current exciting innovation. The focus of this introductory class is producing prints on protein fibers, that is, silk and wool.

On Day 1, students will focus on exploring printing on silk and wool fibers using iron and/or alum as mordants. Participants will learn ways to place, roll and tie the samples into bundles. They will simmer the bundles to make the prints, then have the pleasure of opening them and seeing the magic! Day 2 is slated for personal exploration. Students will have time to experiment with different plant materials, then will print a scarf and other items of their choice. Stunning botanical prints with beautiful color subtleties and patterns are our goal!

Instructor Merridee Joan Smith is a chemist who is also enthralled with fiber and plants. These combined interests have resulted in her second career in fiber arts: silk painting, botanical printing and felt making. Merridee’s recent focus on printing and dyeing using natural materials is rooted in her passion for gardening and visiting botanical gardens. She says it is so satisfying to use the natural materials around us (and a little chemistry) to create beautiful cloth!

Registration is $120 to SCTA and SWSG members, $150 to non-members. There is a $30 materials fee for each student, payable to Merridee Smith the first day of class. A supplies list will be provided. Space is limited to eight students, and we expect the workshop to fill up fast. Priority will be given on a first-come basis. and to SCTA members.
