It starts in Maryland near the PA/MD border at Pen Mar Park, follows the Appalachian Trail through Maryland, and ends in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The distance is about 41 miles over rocky and rough trail with several significant climbs. This hike is intended for the serious hiker who has done three or more training hikes of 15 miles and more. At a bare minimum, hikers should be able to hike at a rate of 2.5 to 3 miles an hour for 14 hours over mountainous terrain.The registration fee for the hike is $60 plus the Eventbrite processing fees of $5.87. The cost covers snacks and water/Gatorade at nine checkpoints, including a lunch at Washington Monument Park checkpoint, a continental breakfast Saturday morning, a bed in the dorms if needed, and a HAM T-Shirt.We will be using Camp Round Meadow as our staging point. The camp is located in the Catoctin Mountain Park 14840 Manahan Road, Sabillasville, MD 21780Free Housing (Night before Hike 5/22): Hikers will be able to stay in the dorms at the Camp Friday night. There are 4 dorms which offer electricity and heat. There is no wifi at the camp grounds. Each dormitory also has two bathrooms including flush toilets, sinks and hot showers. We have enough beds for 120 people. There is no cost for staying in the dorms. Beds will be available on a first come first serve basis. If you would like to have a bed in the dorms you must request a spot when you register. If you decide later on that you don’t need a bed, please email HAM@mcomd.org.Check-in All hikers will be required to check in Friday at Camp Round Meadow between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Friday. There will be no check-in on Saturday morning. When you check-in on Friday you will receive your bib number and T-shirt. No shows will be considered withdrawn. If you register for a bed you will get your dorm assignment when you check in.Saturday Morning We will gather at the buses at 4:30 am on Saturday morning where we will load buses by 4:45 am sharp to be taken to the starting point. It is a 20 minute ride to the access point, so anyone who does not show up in time to ride the bus will be considered withdrawn (even if you checked-in the night before). For safety reasons, you must ride the bus to the starting point.Those not sleeping at Camp Round Meadow must return to Camp Round Meadow by 4:15 AM the morning of the hike. Transportation to the start of the hike will leave at 4:45 AM and the hike will start about 5:20 AM.Transportation: Hikers must provide their own transportation to Camp Round Meadow at Catoctin Mountain Park on May 22 and then home from Harpers Ferry, WV at the end of the hike on May 23. No transportation will be provided except from Camp Round Meadow to the start of the hike and to Harpers Ferry for those who drop out at one of the checkpoints. If there is enough interest we will arrange for bus transportation from the Harpers Ferry Parking lot to Camp Round Meadow Friday night.Waiting List: We can only register 150 hikers for this event. Once we reach our maximum you will have the option to be placed on a waiting list. If we get a cancellation, we will reach out to the hikers based on who registered first until we can fill the spot. There is a very good chance that you will be able to get a spot. We have had on an average of 25 hikers that drop out due to injuries and other issues before the HAM, so you should probably keep training, just in case!Refunds Policy: Refunds will be available until April 6th. After that date no refunds will be allowed. You will be refunded the $60.00 registration fee; however, we will not be able to refund the $5.87 Eventbrite service fee.Hike across Maryland Cancellation Policy: The HAM occurs rain or shine. However, in the event of extreme weather conditions or other circumstances that may risk the safety of participants, volunteers, and the local community, the event may be cancelled. The decision to cancel will be made two days before the hike.
