Over the past few months Marysa has been hosting Homemakers Swap Clubs in the Kawakawa community, and I we have encouraged her to bring this kaupapa home to our own people at the marae ??‍??

This is an opportunity for whānau who are passionate about homemaking, growing kai, preserving food, crafting, harvesting, and living more sustainably to come together and share their skills, knowledge, and creations.??

It’s also a beautiful way to get our kuia and kaumātua out and mingling with the next generation of homemakers who aspire to learn from them and carry these skills and traditions forward. 

Whether you’re an experienced homemaker or just beginning your journey, everyone has something to teach and something to learn.
Be part of strengthening our connections, sharing our mātauranga, and rebuilding the village together. 

What is a Homemakers Swap? ?

Our kuia and kaumātua have been doing this for generations. Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped making and creating for ourselves and started relying on buying everything instead.

Now, more than ever, I believe these skills, knowledge, and village ways of living need to return.

A Homemakers Swap is more than just exchanging goods. It’s an opportunity to learn, teach, share kai, skills, recipes, and mātauranga. It’s a space for whānau to come together, wānanga, build whanaungatanga, and connect with intention and value.

This kaupapa encourages everyone to bring something to the table and leave with a collection of beautiful items made, grown, harvested, or crafted with love by our own people.

Important Information: ‼️

• You must bring 5 of the same item to place on the swap table.
• All items must be homemade, homegrown, harvested, or handcrafted by you.
• No store-bought items.
• Consumable items must be clearly labelled with ingredients and a date made (for allergy and food safety purposes).
• All items must be clean, safe, and of good quality.

Come along, share your skills and be part of rebuilding the village our tūpuna knew so well. 

If you are unsure on what to bring here are some ideas ? : 

Cuttings, Plants, seeds, home grown veggies, baked goods, preserved foods, Sourdough starter, bread, sauces, jams, Homemade pantry items, DIY cleaning products, handmade self-care items, soaps, creams, balms, pani, cough syrups, Rongoa Mãori, arts & crafts, knitting, crochet, sewing, candles & anything homemade. TikTok and social media have some great ideas.
