- **Event Description**: Sea Week Aotearoa is a nationwide initiative that celebrates our ocean and encourages communities to connect with and protect our marine environment. It highlights the simple truth that the health of the ocean is directly linked to the health of our people, our economy, and our future — especially in places like the Bay of Islands where the moana shapes daily life.

We’ve been invited to activate Sea Week locally and are volunteering our time to bring the community together around this kaupapa.

To open the week:

Sunday 1 March – Paihia Beach
A free community breathwork session with optional cold immersion. This will be a relaxed gathering focused on connection, ocean awareness, and bringing together locals and ocean lovers. No cost — just community.

To close the week:

Sunday 8 March – Pirates, Mermaids & Ocean Guardians Day
A family-friendly dress-up celebration at the beach with treasure hunts, sand sculpture building, beach clean-up (with Sustainable Coastlines and Ocean Mind Project), Discover Mermaid and Discover Freedive experiences, creative activities, and major prize giveaways.

Supporting this kaupapa means:
• Strengthening community connection
• Encouraging environmental stewardship
• Creating positive ocean experiences for tamariki and families
• Building pride in our coastal identity
• Giving back through volunteering and shared action

Our hope is to shape this into an annual Bay of Islands Sea Week celebration that grows each year with community involvement.
